YouTube 1080p video, Super high-rez on the way

When last year YouTube rolled out the ability to stream and upload 720p video, only 1% of the videos uploaded took advantage of that clean HD resolution. With that number approaching 10%, now YouTube announced it will increase the maximum videos resolution to 1080p.
YouTube Director of Product Management Hunter Walk says the company is re-encoding all the 1080p videos that have been uploaded over the past year, vowing to let users stream video that looks as good or better than the source quality, and they’re about halfway through that process now.
Sure, this is a great news. While still allowing mobile video watchers and desktop users to enjoy streaming videos at the appropriate resolutions, YouTube is aiming at that “10 foot experience,” too. Astonishing stat: in each minute users upload 20 hours’ worth of video to YouTube. YouTube 1080p video is now live, here’s an example.
